Eleanor isn’t her real name though - it’s been given to her for this scenario; she’s a robot known as Victoria. “That’s a good thing,” Anderson said. “We want them to make mistakes here rather than up on the ward on real patients.” She bleeds, urinates and pushes her baby out to the rhythm of her contractions, not to mention the additional attachments that allow trainees to practice repairing perineal tears.

“We want them to be able to get over the initial shock of an emergency so their first instinct when that alarm goes off isn’t to hide in the broom cupboard.”This uncanny valley is located on the ground floor of the hospital. The simulation centre – formerly a storage area for old furniture and research papers – has been fitted out to closely resemble rooms in the maternity ward complete with the usual array of monitoring equipment, oxygen outlets and supplies.
