Narendra Modi's BJP secures a landslide victory in the Delhi state elections, ending the Aam Aadmi Party's 7-year rule. This win bolsters the BJP's parliamentary standing and strengthens Modi's political position.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party ( BJP ) has secured a resounding victory in the Delhi state elections, marking their first return to power in the capital city after 27 years. The BJP won 48 out of the 70 seats in the Delhi Legislative Assembly, significantly outpacing the 22 seats secured by the incumbent Aam Aadmi Party ( AAP ) led by Arvind Kejriwal.
This victory propels the BJP's strength in the upper house of parliament, strategically crucial for legislative decision-making.Modi expressed his commitment to Delhi's development and the betterment of citizens' lives on social media platform X. The AAP, which rose from an anti-corruption movement in 2012, achieved its first electoral success in Delhi and governed the territory, including India's parliament and federal government offices, for two consecutive terms from 2015. Kejriwal, a vocal critic of Modi and a prominent anti-corruption figure, faced arrest on corruption charges weeks before the previous general election. He alleged this was politically motivated by the Modi government. Subsequently released on bail, Kejriwal resigned as Delhi Chief Minister to focus on campaigning for the state election, ultimately losing the seat he contested.Despite the setback, Kejriwal pledged to play a constructive role as the opposition, emphasizing the AAP's efforts to enhance Delhi's infrastructure, education, and healthcare over the past decade. The AAP, renowned for its populist policies such as free water and electricity for the poor, its core voter base, faced a strong challenge from the BJP. The BJP countered with a series of promises, including monthly payments of 2,500 Indian rupees to all poor women, a one-time payment of 21,000 rupees to each pregnant woman, subsidized cooking gas, a monthly pension of 2,500 rupees for the elderly, and 15,000 rupees for youth to prepare for competitive exams.
