“We were used to having regular water in Ciudad Juárez where we lived, so it was very different to come here and not be able to trust our drinking water,” Martínez said in Spanish. “There’s no company that finds it profitable to come into these communities and provide low-cost filtration units,” said Ivonne Santiago, an engineering professor at UT-El Paso who has worked in El Paso colonias for more than a decade. “So this is really a dream come true.”
But Gugliuzza added that historically underserved communities do have greater distrust of their water. A national found that while 75% of white Americans trust their tap water, only about 65% of Black and Hispanic Americans trust their water.
