Hundred of legendary African Americans left their mark on Houston in various arenas. Here's a look into the lives and contributions of just some of these significant Black Houstonians.

In 1972, she became first Black woman from the South to serve in Congress.She was also a professor at LBJ School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas at Austin. As a member of Congress, Jordan attained national fame during the impeachment proceedings against President Nixon when she became a public defender of the U.S. Constitution.Jordan died Jan. 17, 1996, at the age of 59.
He continued the fight in the Texas Legislature and in Washington for those less privileged, on issues such as alleviating hunger and poverty, protecting civil rights and expanding access to health care.Taylor was an entrepreneur, multi-millionaire, political and civic leader who started as insurance salesman and later founded a taxicab business . He was a delegate to the 1944 Democratic National Convention and the first Black delegate from a Southern state since Reconstruction.
