Singer and guitarist Dan Auerbach talks about the tough early days in the Black Keys and how he and Patrick Carney keep the band rolling
Q: There are increasingly fewer rock bands out there that labor over the concept of an album. But you two still treat that like something deliberately created rather than something to be chopped up into pieces.
A: We were lucky. We definitely made our name by hitting the road. And we hit the road when we were young, zigzagging all across North America and not making any money. For a while it felt like each tour we were starting over. There was this time, we felt there was no possibility we could keep doing it. It was a psychotic way of touring. We drove multiple vehicles into the ground. Because of that I have a hard time staying still these days. I get impatient.
Q: Wait. What? Am I the absolute last person to know this? He is one of my all-time favorite guitarists.Q: I don’t know what to say about this. I’ll do my best to process it later. Go on . . . A: I think coming off that record was a hard reset. And it put us in a really good frame of mind. We knew we weren’t the same people we were when we were 16, 17, hearing some of that music for the first time. It was just us working off raw inspiration, you know? And flying by the seat of our pants. But there’s a gift we’ve been given, which is the time to think about that. Since we were 16, 17, we worked a long time without pre-planning.
Q: Going back a bit, I’ve long wondered if the “Thickfreakness” album cover was an homage to the “Raising Arizona” jailbreak/pomade scene.
