Congressional Black Caucus calls for meeting with president as protests over Nichols’s killing by police in Memphis continue

“Many Black and brown people, however, and many young people in general, are justifiably afraid to interact with law enforcement officials.” The Senate judiciary committee’s chairperson, Dick Durbin, said on Sunday that Congress can pass additional policing measures like “screening, training, accreditation, to up the game so that the people who have this responsibility to keep us safe really are stable and approaching this in a professional manner”.
Also Sunday, the civil rights attorney representing the Nichols family, Benjamin Crump, called for Congress to pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act. Later that night protesters gathered outside Memphis city hall to mark the victory but said it was just the first step.
