Event features a food festival pop-up this weekend in Fremont
The Bay Area’s largest halal food organization has teamed up with eight restaurants and food vendors to increase awareness of Black-owned businesses and Black community needs in this still-challenging pandemic economy., which runs from this Friday, Feb. 25, through Monday, Feb. 28, will offer three days of culinary deals and pop-up events followed by a day of fasting and community fundraising.
“Combining Black History Month, great food and supporting organizations doing good works in our communities, Black Muslim Food Week is a way to harness the positive impact of our collective foodie community,” said the three coordinators — Abbas Mohamed, founder of the Bay Area Halal Foodies group on Facebook; Jabir Faqir, of Ansar Partners; and Irfan Rydhan, founder of Halalfest — in their event announcement.
On Friday and Saturday, culinary deals will be offered at the individual restaurant locations. Jubba of San Jose, Rajabelle of Oakland and My Good Pie of San Francisco will participate both days. On Friday, 523 Southern Halal BBQ will take part in a Jummah Pop-up at the Tracy Islamic Center. And on Saturday, Cafe Salaam will join the other restaurants in offering a special at its Oakland kitchen.
On Sunday, six of the vendors will gather in Fremont for a pop-up event hosted by the Ta’leef Collective, a nonprofit Islamic community group. Look for Cafe Salaam’s food truck, 523 Southern Halal BBQ, the Chimulita food truck, Rajabelle’s, Ra’oof’s Bean Pies and Papa’s Bean Pies to sell their specialties from 1:30 to 6:30 p.m. outdoors at the Ta’leef center, 43170 Osgood Road. The event is open to the public, and admission is free.
