Ukrainian authorities have warned that a “radioactive cloud” could be blown over Ukraine, Russia, and other parts of Europe after Russian forces cut off the power supply at the defunct Chernobyl nuclear plant.
Ukraine’s state-run nuclear companythat a high-voltage power line to the plant had been severed “due to damage by the occupiers,” making it impossible to cool some 20,000 spent fuel assemblies at the site of the world’s worst-ever nuclear disaster. If that spent nuclear fuel warms up, Energoatom said it could lead to “the release of radioactive substances into the environment. The radioactive cloud could be carried by wind to other regions of Ukraine, Belarus, Russia, and Europe.
