Thousands of households and businesses in NSW could be exposed to mass blackouts as the combination of a looming heatwave and coal-fired power outages heaps pressure on the electricity grid.
New South Wales residents have been warned of blackouts as a looming heatwave piles pressure on the state's electricity grid amid expected coal-fired power outages.
Electricity demand will be high as Aussies will be switching on air-conditioning for consecutive days heaping significant stress on the electrical grid. "AEMO has alerted the energy industry and is working with power station operators and transmission businesses to boost electricity availability," an AEMO spokesman said.AEMO said if companies did not offer assistance and remain inadequate in responses, the operator may have to jump in the market and force companies to switch off to"maintain supply".
The reason behind the outage comes as three out of four NSW's coal-fired power plants are currently not in operation due to repairs and maintenance. The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a heatwave warning impacting Sydney, Illawarra, South Coast, Southern Tablelands Districts and the Hunter region until Wednesday night.
"At the moment, low intensity… but it will build to a severe intensity heatwave for a number of spots including western Sydney over the next few days," Sharpe said.
