Snell regained the National League ERA lead and, in the process, kept himself near the top of the National League Cy Young discussion. Snell, who won the American League Cy Young award in 2018 while with the Rays, would be just the seventh pitcher to win the award in both leagues. They are the only pitchers in the NL with an ERA below 3.00, and just three other starting pitchers conceivably in the Cy Young likely have enough time to lower their ERA below that mark. Rick Porcello is the only pitcher in the past 15 seasons to have won the award with an ERA above 2.96.
Snell on Wednesday made his 21st start against a playoff contender and lowered his ERA in those games to 2.26. In 17 starts against playoff contenders, Steele has a 2.82 ERA.
