In a statement prior to Blinken’s visit, Rwanda’s government said it was looking forward to a “robust exchange of views on governance and human rights, as has always been the case in the Rwanda-US bilateral relationship”. It acknowledged the talks would include Rusesabagina’s situation.During an interview earlier this week in South“Alas, in quite a large number of countries around the world, there are US citizens and US residents who are unjustly detained.
A third actor is Uganda, which has long vied for influence with Rwanda in the region. Although once close to the US, the relationship has soured in recent years over the crushing of political dissent and western pressure to recognise LGBTQ+ rights. Yoweri Museveni, in power since 1986 and the recipient of huge sums of western aid, has accused the west of interfering in domestic affairs.in Africa to rally support for Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.
