Blizzard Bans Hearthstone Esports Player For “Liberate Hong Kong” Comments

Blizzard Entertainment has banned Ng Wai Chung and stripped him of his prize money after the professional gamer shouted slogans in support of Hong Kong’s pro-democracy movement

Blitzchung appeared dressed in a gas mask and goggles and shouted “Liberate Hong Kong. Revolution of our age!” in Mandarin on a live-streamed interview after winning a match in the Hearthstone Grandmasters tournament on Sunday. Blizzard announced it would punish Blitzchung by kicking him out of the Grandmasters tournament, stripping him of prize money he had already won, and placing him on a 12-month suspension from professional“While we stand by one’s right to express individual thoughts and opinions, players and other participants that elect to participate in our esports competitions must abide by the official competition rules,” Blizzard said.

Blizzard’s heavy handed treatment of Blitzchung appears to be an attempt to protect its slice of China’smarket and avoid the fate of the NBA. The basketball league face being locked out of one of its fastest growing markets after Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey tweeted his support for Hong Kong’s protesters. The tweet was quickly deleted and the NBA and the Rockets distanced themselves from Morey’s comments but still the basketball leagues faces a mounting backlash in China.
