Professor Kristine Macartney, director of the National Centre for Immunisation Research and Surveillance, said targeted testing had been key to the nation’s success to date. “They won’t pick up infections that are really recent, so in the last week or two, but they'll pick up infections that occurred before that,” he said. The person that initially gave the blood would not be identified, even if they were found to have coronavirus antibodies, he said.“We're testing them anonymously,” Professor Kaldor said. “So there's no link back to the individual person apart from knowing their age, sex and postcode.The national surveillance plan advises against large-scale testing of people without symptoms for current infection, except for limited at-risk groups including health and aged care workers.
