BMW has built its last V-12.
The limited-edition 7-Series, simply called"The Final V12," was offered to buyers with a history of BMW V-12 ownership, according to the brand. All 12 examples are bound for the U.S., with deliveries to be completed this month.
BMW has a long history with the V-12 engine configuration. The motor first appeared under the hood of the E32-generation 7-Series in 1987 before being offered in the 8-Series coupe two years later. BMW was the first company to offer a production car with a V-12 and a six-speed manual transmission, in the 850i.
The most famous BMW V-12, shown above, is undoubtedly the S70/2. Designed for use in the McLaren F1, it uses the same architecture as the company's original V-12, albeit with new heads, individual throttle bodies, a dry-sump oiling system, and many more upgrades. Versions of this engine also appeared in the BMW V12 LMR Le Mans racer.
If you want to buy a BMW-built V-12 going forward, you'll have to look to Rolls-Royce.
