Locals in the small Illawarra community of Helensburgh have congratulated Saya Sakakibara as she visited her hometown on Wednesday after winning gold in BMX racing at the Paris Olympics .The 24-year-old will depart for the UK next week to spend time with family until competitive racing starts again next year.Share article
Sakakibara wandered the main street of Helensburgh, a small town in the Illawarra region of NSW, to be greeted by dozens of residents.won gold in the women's BMX racing event at ParisWith her medal draped around her neck, Sakakibara visited a mural painted on the side of a Helensburgh pet store in honour of her and her brother Kai, who was injured in the same sport in 2020.Mother Yuki Sakakibara joins Saya and Kai during their visit to the mural in Helensburgh.
"I was so excited I had to race over and throw the gold medal on her as fast as I could," Ms Rowan said. Saya Sakakibara has endured things as an athlete that many would ever recover from — but her Olympic gold medal is a testament to her strength, and that of her entire family."I could see that joy on her face, in that wondrous feeling of you being encapsulated bigger than life in your own community.""It's crazy some people have been brave enough to paint up a mural for Saya and I," he said.
