A person either wants to spend 10 hours relitigating the Reformation or they don’t.

I am a dyed-in-the-wool board gaming sicko. I listen to tabletop podcasts, watch tabletop YouTube videos, and once owned over 300 tabletop games before paring down my collection considerably after moving to New York. This makes me the exact sort of person who should object with Liu’s thesis, perhaps by listing off a litany of self-help methods to make her board gaming dalliances more enjoyable or fruitful.

I think a lot of those tips can be useful. You can, for instance, start with some lighter fare and never, by any means, indulge the Devil’s Promise of “We’ll just figure it out as we go along” when learning the rules. But frankly, after a decade with this hobby, and after desperately trying to tabletop-pill so many of my wonderfully appeasing friends—an effort that’s led to innumerable unsatisfying board game nights along the way—I’ve become incredibly sympathetic to Liu’s perspective.

Balancing those twin demands is a key challenge for U.S. President Joe Biden as his administration seeks to prevent leaks while protecting U.S. security and ensuring allies fearful of exposure keep sharing intelligence. The conflict has been raised anew following the FBI arrest on Thursday of Jack Teixeira, a 21-year-old U.S. Air Force National Guard employee, in connection with damaging online leaks of dozens of highly secret U.S. documents that purportedly disclose sensitive details ranging from Ukraine's military weaknesses to information about U.S. allies.

The Young Gamers Who Shook the Intelligence WorldThe Young Gamers Who Shook the Intelligence WorldThe 21-year-old National Guard airman was frantic as he joined a call with members of a small online gamer community that has improbably ended up at the center of a federal investigation into a major U.S. security breach. It sounded as if the airman, Jack Teixeira, was in a speeding car, said a member of the group who uses the screen name Vahki. “Guys, it’s been good — I love you all,” Teixeira said, Vahki recounted. “I never wanted it to get like this.
