A cruise ship has helped save two people who were found clinging to a dinghy after their vessel took on water off Wilsons Promontory in Gippsland in South East Victoria. 9News

A 58-year-old man and 29-year-old woman left Queenscliff early yesterday and were travelling to Port Albert, but by 10pm, they had lost fuel and gotten into difficulty just off Skull Rock.

The pair were forced to abandon the boat and get into a dinghy that had been attached to it, before setting off an emergency beacon to get help.A police helicopter team located the pair about midnight and organised for staff from the Grand Princess cruise ship in Bass Strait to send a rescue craft to the man and woman."After being secured on board, they were both assessed by our medical team with no major injuries," a Grand Princess spokesperson said in a statement.

"We'd like to take this opportunity to thank our crew led by our Captain Christopher Lye as well as our colleagues at Victorian Police on this incredible outcome."
