Foreign policy getting attention as Republican Gov. Greg Abbott and Democrat Beto O’Rourke trade jabs over Russia’s invasion.
Though the Republican governor and former congressman Beto O’Rourke had not yet won their respective parties’ nominations for governor – that happened a week later – Abbott pummeled the Democrat for his 2015 vote against theThe bill, which the then-GOP-controlled U.S. House passed but which died in the Senate, would have expedited permits by the U.S. Department of Energy for exporting natural gas that’s been cooled down to liquid form.
On the evening after he won renomination, Abbott reacted to Biden’s state of the union speech by saying, “If President Biden really wants to help the world energy market, instead of releasing three days worth of oil from the reserve, he should unleash the American oil and gas sector.” The next day, Abbott strategist Dave Carney, speaking to reporters, said O’Rourke’s votes as a House member in 2014 against measures protesting Russia’s invasion of Crimea showed poor judgment.
Reviewing the Russo-Ukrainian conflict of the past eight years and Texas politicians’ reactions to Russia’s increasingly brazen actions on the world stage, I was struck by how the dovish O’Rourke quickly turned hawk on Russia soon after Donald Trump became president. I also was struck by how Abbott’s chest-thumping of late contrasts with his silence during four years of controversy about Trump’s acquiescence to Russia’s meddling in the 2016 U.S.
