Police are investigating whether an elderly couple found dead on the Gold Coast took their own lives to avoid being admitted into an aged care home. The bodies of the 81-year-old man and 79-year-old woman were found inside a unit block in the Magic Mountain apartment complex on Great Hall Dr in Miami about 4.10pm on Thursday. Detective Inspector Mark Mooney said the couple were discovered by their adult daughter when she returned home to the property.
“There was a typed message ,” he said on Friday. “We are still trying to determine the veracity, the note indicates they were not interested in moving into a home.” Mooney said the couple both struggled with poor health and there was no evidence of violence at the scene. “They were both ill,” he said. “The woman had dementia and the man had a hip issue and had just left hospital.” Mooney said the couple had lived on the Gold Coast for more than 20 years.
