A person’s body has been located near a reserve in Sydney’s west while another woman has been pulled from floodwaters in a dramatic rescue near Wollongong, in the aftermath of torrential downpours across NSW.
Large parts of NSW have been taken over by sweeping floods in the wake of a three-day spell of rainfall, with emergency services rescuing hundreds of stranded residents and finding one dead in western Sydney.
NSW Police said an investigation had been launched into the incident and that a coroner’s report would be prepared. Two volunteers were then forced to wade through the floodwaters to reach the woman and bring her back to safety, with the help of rescue lines. The severe weather event, which stretched from late Wednesday to Saturday morning bringing uninterrupted levels of rainfall, has led to widespread flash flooding and wreaked damage to properties and roads through coastal regions of the state.
The Warragamba Dam, which supplies 80 per cent of Greater Sydney's water, started to spill over just before 6am after it quickly filled from the downpours. In an update at 3.30pm NSW SES State Duty Commander Dean Storey, said riverine flooding will continue to impact people who live in properties along the Hawkesbury, Nepean and Colo Rivers.
