And now BoHo has joined the list of Chicago theaters that have decided it’s time to fold the tents and close the book on their history. Elizabeth Swanson, who took the reins as BoHo artistic director in December 2021, notes that while there was no single precipitating event leading to the decision, there were several financial issues related to the company’s sustainability.
“Very early in my tenure, it became clear that the number of hours required of my position were just ballooning far past what the advertised rate was,” Swanson says. “And I say that not to harp on myself, but to hold it as an indicator of how every worker was being compensated and drained. Staff burnout was already something that the company was conscious of and it had already certainly occurred, and that burnout was very clearly going to keep going forward into another season.
They add, “We started talking seriously about pay equity pretty early in my tenure as well. And so those sort of tendrils shot out from—I’d say last spring, but it became clear last fall that financially we were in a very difficult position. It was not a certainty that we would even be able to open our winter show,Like many companies in Chicago and elsewhere, BoHo presented digital plays during the COVID-19 shutdown.
