The Cleveland Water Department is cautioning residents in Brunswick and in parts of Strongsville and North Royalton to boil tap water before using or to use bottled water.

The department says the water-main breaks might allow disease-causing organisms to contaminate water from the tap.Brunswick City Schools have canceled classes for Wednesday “out of an abundance of caution and for sanitary reasons,” according to aCustomers are advised to not use water from taps until flushing and boiling it first. The department advises customers to remove aerator screens if possible and flush all taps for at least three minutes, then reattach the aerators.

Signs of a waterborne illness can include nausea, vomiting and stomach discomfort. People with severely compromised immune systems, infants, and some elderly people might be at increased risk. If a person experiences one or more of these symptoms and they persist, then the person should contact a doctor.

Other ways to reduce possible lead levels in water include cleaning the faucet aerator, and also running the tap until there is a noticeable temperature drop, then running it for 30 seconds to three minutes before using it for drinking and cooking.
