The head of Russia’s Nuclear, Biological, and Chemical Defence Forces, Liutenant General Igor Kirillov, has been killed by an explosive device planted close to a residential apartment block in Moscow, Russia’s Investigative Committee said.The explosion was caused by a device planted on a scooter near the entrance to the building.
Kirillov was sentenced in absentia by a Ukrainian court on Monday for the use of banned chemical weapons during Russia’s military operation in Ukraine that started in February 2022. Ukraine’s Security Service, the SBU, said that they had recorded more than 4,800 uses of chemical weapons on the battlefield since February 2022, particularly K-1 combat grenades.Russia Defence Ministry/AP
Russian media said Kirillov had been killed on Ryazansky Prospekt, a road that starts some 7 kilometres south-east of the Kremlin.TASS state news agency said two people were killed in an explosion on Moscow’s Ryazansky Prospekt. Investigators and forensic experts were working at the scene together with employees of other emergency services, TASS agency reported.Last week, Ukrainian media quotes Ukrainian intelligence sources claiming to have assassinated Mikhail Shatsky, a scientist reportedly working on introducing artificial intelligence into Russian drones and weapons.
