'It's a good feeling to be able to help - to be giving him something he really needs that really only I can provide.' 👏 Loftea 9News

Thankfully extensive blood testing concluded that my brother Simon and I are a match. The washing machine thing filters out my stem cells and stores them ready for transfer to Simon.

He's upstairs right now on a bed too, feeling "a bit ordinary" after a few days of chemo to kill off his remaining immunity so he can accept mine. Once he's dosed up with my stem cells they will multiply inside him, giving him a new lease on life and protect him from everyday infections the rest us easily fend off. It's a good feeling to be able to help - to be giving him something he really needs that really only I can provide.

After all, he has been my big brother for so long, it's about time we swap roles and I have a go at being big brother. He can do stuff, practical living life stuff like making and fixing things in a shed, driving a ship, welding, droving cattle, while all I really do is talk. Don't get me wrong, I feel privileged to do what I do for a living and a lot of people know who I am, but right now, lying in this hospital bed, I'm just Simon's littler brother, privileged to be able to do something that can make a real difference.I'm sure it will be a lasting life expression of what binds us together anyway, like brothers and sisters everywhere and anywhere, young, old, black, white, rich and poor, happy or sad.
