Today Sydney's Bondi Beach is legally classified as a nude beach for the first time in history for an art installation featuring hundreds of naked people. 9News

Skin Check Champions CEO Scott Maggs told 9news.com.au that organising this event has been like "climbing Everest" due to the amount of red tape making public nudity on this scale illegal at Bondi Beach.Bondi Beach will be filled with naked people on Saturday to raise awareness about skin cancer.

The artist, Spencer Tunick, said he is honoured the council has allowed the historic event to go ahead. "We're so used to seeing pornography on [streaming service] and in cinema but we forget once you go out in public there are a set of rules that are so archaic," he said.READ MORE: "This is a place where people can keep their anonymity if they're in the middle of the crowd," Tunick said.

"It's about celebrating your own body but also sending a message about skin checks and checking your body for cancer," Tunick said.
