The NSW capital is reeling in the aftermath of the Bondi Junction massacre and a terror stabbing of a church minister in front of his congregation.
, in which six people were killed, and the stabbing of a bishop in mid-sermon at an Assyrian Orthodox Church in Sydney’s west on Monday night, followed by a full-scale riot, have rocked confidence in Australia as a thriving, ethnically diverse country.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese talks of the “overwhelming majority” of Australians respecting difference and wanting to get on. NSW Premier Chris Minns was quick to call an interfaith meeting following Monday night’s terrorist attack on Bishop Mar Mari Emmanuel. Cauchi proceeded to stab to death six people in Westfield Mall, including five women, and injured 12 others.
The second attack was at the Christ the Good Shepherd Assyrian Orthodox Church in Wakeley, about 40 kilometres west of Bondi Junction. A 16-year-old youth dressed in black approached Bishop Emmanuel mid-sermon, and struck him with a concealed instrument on the head and chest. He also stabbed Father Isaac Royel.A livestream video showed members of the congregation pinning the attacker to the floor, and at some point four fingers on his left hand were severed.
The young assailant reportedly said he stabbed the bishop because he had allegedly attacked the Prophet Muhammed. Bishop Emmanuel is a leading conservative in the Assyrian Orthodox Church and thereports that during the pandemic he condemned lockdowns and the use of vaccines. He was also well-known for anti-LGBTQI sermons.
