Ohio offers more programming for incarcerated mothers than many other states. The Ohio Reformatory for Women has a prison nursery program that allows mothers and young children to live with each other.
Bev Whittington, left, and Rebecca Phillips are incarcerated at Northeast Reintegration Center and are also moms.CLEVELAND, Ohio – Every day, Rebecca Phillips calls her 18-year-old daughter before school. She usually calls again about 3 p.m. to check in before soccer practice.
“Sierra is my whole world,” Phillips said, looking at her daughter’s senior portrait. “She’s my everything. She’s just a great kid. I’m so proud of her.”“A lot of people I talk to in here end up losing their children to Child Protective Services, or they get fostered, and they don’t get to talk to them, or other family members end up with them,” she said.Phillips suffers from drug addiction. She lost custody of her daughter when Sierra turned 14.
Phillips said most of the women at Northeast Reintegration Center are moms. She considers the bond between her and her daughter a blessing.Bev Whittington last saw her son 15 months ago, and he rarely picks up the phone when she calls. Whittington said she is grateful the Northeast Reintegration Center has many communication options, such as messaging and video chats, for inmates to connect with loved ones.
