M&A activity was up four times last year, but bankers should not expect their pay to be up by that much as the bonus season rolls in.

Last year was a blockbuster year for investment banks, as company boards sent record levels of follow-on raises, IPOs, and mergers and acquisitions work their way.And now it’s that time of the year when bankers turn their minds to what’s going to be their slice of the pie.

Investment bankers are about to find out how much they take home from Australia’s record M&A in 2021.UBS is usually February/March, and Macquarie Capital’s profit share calculations don’t start until the end of its accounting year in March. While compensation is up this year, poaching is expected to be down. Senior bankers reckon there are fewer pinstripes looking for a change this year, and those that are would be more expensive given remuneration increases and less attractive to new employers.
