The former bookkeeper at a marina in Barnegat was sentenced on Friday to three years in prison Friday for stealing over $100,000 from the company through a series of forged checks, Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley B. Billhimer said.to forging numerous checks from company accounts between January 2018 and December 2021. On Friday, Ocean County Superior Court Judge Linda G. Baxter ordered Dowd to pay back the $108,415 she stole from the marina, in addition to her three-year prison sentence.
An investigation by the Barnegat Township Police Department revealed that Dowd was an employee in the office of a marina in Barnegat Township. According to the prosecutor’s office, Dowd made some of the checks payable to herself and deposited them into her personal checking account. She used other forged checks to pay utilities and her personal credit card bill, officials said.
