Communities on the NSW-Victoria boundary are concerned about the impact of the border closure announced today, with some lobbying for movement restrictions to be imposed further south instead.
"It would be nice if we could do all the administration prior to midnight tomorrow night but I believe that's not going to be possible.
Shane Dwyer, the manager at Bruce's Waterside Units in Mallacoota in Victoria's far east, said he sourced supplies such as long-life milk, soap, detergents and cleaning products from Canberra. "We'd been waiting and waiting until she had her six-week immunisations [and planned] to go up in the last week of July," she said.
Rebecca, from Portland, was travelling to the NSW-Victoria border today to drop off her husband's two children, aged 10 and 11, after a visit for the school holidays. "It's hard and it's painful but we're just trying to do what's in the best interests of both of our families."Cr Speedie said Wodonga and other members of Regional Cities Victoria had been lobbying to have movement restricted in and out of Melbourne rather than at the state border.
"There is also the notion of closing the borders at Broadmeadows rather than up here in the north-east, but I know [that would] affect my other regional counterparts as well.
