Last week, CBS 8 reported that Border Patrol had dropped 13,000 in one month's time, meaning there has been a 5,500 increase in just seven days.
SAN DIEGO — Border Patrol has dropped off more than 18,500 migrants into San Diego over the past five weeks. More than 1,400 migrants have been dropped off in Oceanside and local nonprofits and city governments are stepping up to help. Oceanside Deputy Mayor Ryan Keim spoke to CBS 8 about the impact of the drop offs.
"It's a federal government job and they're failing," he said."The immigration system is broken. To put that load on us is very unfair."Sometimes just an hour and then have to figure out how to deal with that," he said."For me it's frustrating as a city leader. We don't have resources to deal with those issues."set up a temporary site in Oceanside to help connect asylum seekers with their sponsors in the U.S.
"We got nearly 95 percent of them to their sponsor families," said Logan Goverman with Interfaith Community Services. For now, Interfaith Community Services has paused their aid in Oceanside. CBS 8 is told many of the migrants who are brought there are being taken back to San Ysidro whereis stepping in. They are starting to lead efforts for the entire county now that some federal funding has been freed up.
"South Bay Community Services is administering the $3 million the Board of Supervisors approved and essentially doing what we did in Oceanside and now doing it for all of San Diego," Goverman said.Nonprofits stretched thin as thousands of migrants dropped off in San DiegoKFMB would like to send you push notifications about the latest news and weather.
