‘The danger is that our voters will stay at home’ In normal times a victory for the Tories in the Selby by-election – who had a majority of more than 20,000 in 2019 – shouldn't be problem. But these are not normal times BondChris73 and singharj:
. “The danger is that our voters will stay at home. They certainly won’t be voting Labour.”
“It’s not got a grip on immigration and it’s not got a grip on tax – I don’t think it’s got a grip on anything. It’s certainly not got a grip on levelling up for the North, it’s just levelling down for the North.” “This by-election isn’t going to make a scrap of difference to who controls the country at all. If you want to get a message to the main parties in London, then don’t vote Labour or Conservative.”
Arnold Warneken, the Green Party candidate who also stood in the seat in 2019, has picked up the same mood. “People here are disenchanted with politics,” he says. “We have to start thinking about collaboration and compromise.” “He did okay with Brexit and brought the policies in quite quickly. But as a long-term leader? No, I don’t think he was good for the country.”
Down the road from Selby in the village of Brayton, butcher John Dawson says customers are more concerned with the cost of living crisis than who’s going to win the by-election.
