| British Prime Minister Boris Johnson faces a growing backbench mutiny that has drained his authority and imperilled his occupancy of Downing Street, as he flounders in the scandal over his staff’sA clutch of Conservative MPs, mostly the winners of so-called “Red Wall” seats in Labour heartlands at the 2019 election under Mr Johnson’s leadership, are in open revolt. One of their number, Christian Wakeford, even took the dramatic step of defecting to Labour.

Mr Johnson’s defence is that he “implicitly believed” the bring-your-own-booze gathering of 40 people was a work event, and also that nobody had suggested to him that the event - held in May 2020, when non-essential interaction of any kind was all but banned - was illegal.

It is widely assumed that Mr Bradley has received at least a quarter of the 54 letters required, particularly after the media ventilated details of a plot among relatively recently installed MPs fearful for their electoral future. The original hope appears to have been that this report, which could be published at the end of this week, would draw a line under the affair. But events seem to be moving faster than Ms Gray.Mr Wakeford physically crossed the floor at the start of Mr Johnson’s weekly question time appearance in the House of Commons, joining Opposition Leader Keir Starmer’s ranks.

He later told journalists: “I was elected as a moderate and a centrist, and I am still a moderate and a centrist. I’m just wearing a different rosette.”
