Analysis: Johnson confident but final election outcome less certain | bevanshields
Flicking the switch to his default stunt mode on Tuesday, the Prime Minister was beaming as he smashed through a polystyrene wall emblazoned with 'GRIDLOCK' in a digger fitted with a 'GET BREXIT DONE' sign. Subtlety has never been Johnson's strong suit. But with just two days to go before polling day and huge group of undecided voters to woo, the message was, at the very least, effective.
"This is a momentous occasion for our country. I've never known an election like it, I've never known a moment where the choice before us was so clear and so stark," Johnson said at the Staffordshire rally."As I say, the only mathematical alternative to a working majority Conservative government is a real risk of another hung Parliament. That’s another five years of confusion, chaos, dither, delay and division. We cannot go down that route.
In that scenario, Johnson's position as Prime Minister would be in jeopardy and Brexit would effectively collapse. With few natural partners in Westminster to govern in coalition with, Johnson could watch on as Jeremy Corbyn cobbles together a minority government and drives to Buckingham Palace to take the prize.
It's an unlikely outcome but few are prepared to rule it out until the polls close and votes are counted. Strap in just to be safe - there could be more gridlock ahead.
