A defiant Boris Johnson has vowed to remain British prime minister and contest the next election as calls for his resignation snowballed.

"You have sat too long here for any good you have been doing," Conservative grandee David Davis told his leader in the House of Commons on Wednesday. "In the name of God, go!"

A new poll commissioned by TV network Channel 4 said many of the 2019 Tory intake would be wiped out in a future election if Mr Johnson remains and gave Labour an 11-point lead overall. Activist Steve Bray holds an anti-Boris Johnson placard and a balloon with 'Party's Over' written on it, during a demonstration in London. As a laughing Sir Keir pointed to Mr Wakeford sitting in the Labour ranks at Prime Minister's Questions, Mr Johnson shrugged off the blow.

"He's entirely focused on his job and on delivering for the British public," she told reporters while denying reports that Mr Johnson had broken down in tears during one crunch meeting with backbenchers.
