Johnson had the perfect chance to rebuild his reputation, but he bottled it

On Monday, Sunak also caused some muttering among his backbench MPs by not doing enough to stop Lee Anderson from defecting to the Reform party. One crumb of comfort for the PM is that at least Lee Anderson hasn’t triggered yet another by-election in Ashfield. At his unveiling as a defector to Reform this week, Anderson offered the lame excuse that calling a by-election so close to a possible general election would cost taxpayers needless expense.
But he’s not the only senior politician to whom that label could apply. Last summer, Boris Johnson had the perfect chance to rebuild his reputation after he was found guilty of deliberately misleading Parliament about “Partygate”.
