Like many Australians contemplating procedures, Ms Messina didn’t realise there was a difference between cosmetic and plastic surgeons. An Andrews government spokesman said the use of the title “surgeon” may be restricted to certain types of medical practitioners if it’s revealed that confusion has led to safety risks and harm.It comes amid a deepening stoush between plastic and cosmetic surgeons over the title “cosmetic surgeon”, with the Australasian Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons saying the term is being exploited by practitioners to falsely advertise themselves as specialists.

Dr Sheen said while plastic surgeons completed eight to 12 years of training accredited by the Australian Medical Council following their medical degrees, most cosmetic surgeons just held a basic medical degree. He has called for a new accredited competency standard in cosmetic surgery that would determine who can call themselves a cosmetic surgeon.

Geelong plastic surgeon Dr Peter Callan has spent a lot of time fixing the mistakes of underqualified cosmetic surgeons.
