Three women in New South Wales have been hospitalized with suspected botulism following at-home anti-wrinkle injections. Authorities are investigating the incident and urging the public to be aware of the symptoms of botulism.
Another two women have been hospitalized amid a 'likely' botulism outbreak following at-home anti-wrinkle injections. New South Wales Health issued a public alert on Friday as it was reported a woman was rushed to the intensive care unit (ICU) after receiving unauthorized cosmetic anti-wrinkle injections. The 51-year-old was initially taken to Auburn Hospital before being transferred to Westmead Hospital where she is in intensive care.
On Saturday, it emerged that two more women are now being treated in hospital with suspected botulism also believed to be linked to the unregulated injections. NSW Police said all three women had received the same injection from the same person at a home in Guildford on January 11, The Daily Telegraph reported. NSW Police is working alongside NSW Health and the Health Care Complaints Commission on the matter. Unregulated anti-wrinkle injections carry major risks 'if used incorrectly' as they can lead to serious harm or death in the most severe cases, NSW Health Executive Director Health Protection Dr Jeremy McAnulty said on Friday. “Botulism, although rare, can be fatal, which is why it is so important that anyone receiving cosmetic injections does so under the supervision of an appropriately registered health practitioner,' he said. “In this particular case, investigations are continuing, but we want people to be aware of the symptoms of botulism as others could have been exposed.”Symptoms of botulism may include progressive weakness, difficulty swallowing, drooping eyelids, blurred or double vision and difficulty breathing
