The boy's injuries could have been fatal, police say, as they appeal for witnesses to the incident.
The white Ford Transit van hit the boy on Queens Drive in Nantwich, Cheshire, at about 16:28 BST on Monday, police said.
The boy suffered serious head injuries and was flown to Alder Hey Children's Hospital, where his condition was described as stable."The child in this case has sustained serious injuries that could have proved fatal, and we are committed to doing all we can to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident," said Sgt Russell Sime.
"The collision occurred on Queens Drive at a busy time of day, and as part of our investigation we're keen to hear from anyone who may have been travelling in the area and witnessed the incident," he added.
