‘Imperative’ hazard reduction burns happen around Sydney despite smoke coverageNSW Rural Fire Service Inspector Ben Shepherd highlights the importance of hazard reduction burns currently happening around Sydney and predicts the smoke covering the city to move off on Saturday. “This is crucial work, we just haven’t had those opportunities through autumn winter to do this,” Mr Shepherd told Sky News Australia. Mr Shepherd said it was “imperative” the burns are done as soon as possible, given the fire risk could start increasing as early as next week. He noted hazard reduction burns do not stop bushfires but rather reduce the intensity. “When we reduce the amount of fuels on the actual forest floor it gives us an opportunity, if a fire does enter into that area, it gives us a greater chance of actually brining it under control.”
