Can't decide between grey or black for your BMW M3 CSL? Have both! For £200k, mind... Don't forget to vote for your favourite BMW M Car of all time 👇

coming later this year will be a CSL. Not a mere CS, nor a GTS but a real Coupe Sport Lightweight. The return of BMW M's most famous badge would be fitting in the firm's 50th anniversary year, though it would need a very, very special car to do it justice. After all, there have only been two BMW CSLs in half a century...

You probably know the M3 CSL story already, because it's something of an icon round these parts, but it's worth repeating. It's hard to believe in a modern context, where track focused cars can sell out before they're announced, but the CSL didn't fly out of the showrooms. It was a lot more money for just 17 more horsepower, there wasn't a manual option, and the standard M3 was already wonderfully good.

Things are rather different now. The CSL is not just a highly coveted modern classic, it's also likely to be a frontrunner in our recently launched best M car ever poll and is seen as a real high point for BMW in the 21st century. Values have been climbing for a while; the switch to turbo M cars will have helped, because nothing since the CSL has sounded quite so good as the 360hp S54 through a carbon airbox.
