Prime Minister Anthony Albanese will “panic” if the Victorian Labor Party fails to hold the seat of Werribee at Saturday’s byelection, state Opposition Leader Brad Battin has warned.

The state government’s ability to retain its seat in Werribee – a stronghold for Labor since 1979 – is essential to maintaining momentum before next year’s state election. Country Fire Authority volunteer and a leader in the Werribee Brigade, John Lister, is fighting for Labor's seat in Werribee, but the party controversially admitted it would not field a candidate in Prahran, which will be a battle between the LNP and the Greens.
Mr Battin said both federal leaders, Peter Dutton and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, will be focussing on Saturday’s results, but a loss for the Liberals at a state level does not translate into a loss for the party in next year’s federal election. The byelections will act as the first key test for the new Liberal Opposition Leader Brad Battin, who ousted John Pesutto in a leadership spill in late 2024.
