It’s been almost three decades since Highway decided to stay and fight the fire. Depending on how he counts the blazes, there’s been either about 250 or 300 since then. “I remember looking up and hearing : ‘What are you, stupid?’ I think I even said it out loud: ‘Yeah, I’m stupid.'” Ballantyne recalls that Highway would be up early in the morning to join planning meetings he didn’t have to attend so he could pass word down the line. Highway thinks more women should be involved in firefighting. He points out the unique role women have as firekeepers, and that “fire” and “woman” have the same linguistic root in Cree. Highway still does that today by attempting to braid traditional knowledge with western fire management approaches. He’s also imparting those bush skills to a new generation.
