Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg may have unlocked Donald Trump's legal war chest by linking the former president's 34-count felony indictment for falsifying business records to the 2016 election in charging documents.
“I think there’s a plausible argument that if this turns out to be an election law case, and it relates to the 2016 election, he can use [campaign funds] to pay his [legal] expenses,” Mr.
said. “I guess the harder question, then, would be can he use the money he is raising now as opposed to the money from his 2016 campaign.”The New York Times reported in February that the former president spent $10 million raised by his Save America political action committee for legal-related expenses in 2021 and 2022. According to the outlet, the majority of that cash went to his defense lawyers in response to an onslaught of investigations and lawsuits.
, the former president is also facing an investigation in Georgia over his efforts to overturn the 2020 election results. He is also facing an investigation into his handling of classified documents recovered from his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida in addition to potential investigations into his role in the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the Capitol.
