The spectre of an anti-corruption inquiry hanging over Tim Crakanthorp has led to jostling between rival left wing factions over his prized seat of Newcastle.

NSW Labor’s powerful administrative committee has put a freeze on new memberships in the ultra-safe seat of Newcastle after allegations of a branch-stacking campaign in the electorate brought on by uncertainty over the future of embattled incumbent Tim Crakanthorp.

Uncertainty over the future of Newcastle MP Tim Crakanthorp is leading to intense factional brawling in the deep-red Labor city.The freeze comes during intense internal animosity within Labor ranks in the steel city, as the spectre of an anti-corruption inquiry hanging over Crakanthorp has led to jostling between the rival left-wing factions over his blue-chip Labor seat.

Senior Labor sources not authorised to speak about internal party matters said that unlike in other branch-stacking scandals, the legitimacy of the new members had not been questioned.
