The Broncos prevailed in the girls team race, while Reagan won the boys team competition.

Johnson girls cross country runners prepare Tuesday, Oct. 11, 2022 for the District 28-6A cross country championships at the North East Sports Park.SAN ANTONIO — Recovering from two years filled with setbacks, Brandeis senior Mikaela Garza capped her district cross country career the way she began it — with a championship.

But after running at national meet in December, Garza discovered she had a stress fracture that ended up sidelining her for spring’s track season. On Tuesday, Garza took the lead with about 800 meters remaining in the 5,000-meter race as she surpassed Clark sophomore Jadeyn Perez, who finished second in 19:12.4. LEE senior Helena Herzog, who was third, battled with Garza and Perez during the first half of the race.“I felt I was running too comfortable, and I felt like I should be pushing it more,” Garza said. “I was a little nervous because I hadn’t run with these girls before.

“Basically, the whole meet, I was keeping an eye on my team, and they were pretty close,” Garza said. “Seeing them cross the line, one after the other, that was super-exciting.”Underwood claimed his first district title after finishing runner-up the last two years. Underwood and Scott, along with Reagan sophomore Gavin Chapa, formed the front pack and broke away early.
