The Jack Russell terrier averages about 10-12 inches high at the shoulder and weighs 9 to 15 pounds, but this one wasn't afraid to challenge a black bear attacking its owner.
STRAFFORD, Vermont — It’s a major mismatch on paper.
Authorities say Lee was with her two dogs, the Jack Russell and a labradoodle, while walking the trails. She reportedly lost sight of the dogs and was calling for them when she heard loud noises and realized a bear was charging at her. Lee was taken by a neighbor to Gifford Medical Center and her injuries were non-life-threatening. In addition to the bite on her leg she had multiple scratches between 2 and 9 inches long on both her sides, authorities say.
The Fish and Wildlife Department says there are only three prior bear attacks recorded in the Vermont.
