A Brazilian stepmother is accused of intentionally drowning her three-year-old stepdaughter in a washing machine, leaving the child's father seeking justice. Prosecutors allege a premeditated act driven by jealousy, while the defense claims it was an accident.

Prosecutors in Brazil allege that Suzana Dazar dos Santos, a stepmother, deliberately drowned her stepdaughter, three-year-old Isabelly de Oliveira Assumpcao, in an open-top washing machine filled with water. The incident occurred on the night before Mother's Day in 2022 while the child's father was at work. Prosecutors claim that Ms. Santos, motivated by jealousy, orchestrated the tragic event to sever the bond between her partner and his ex-wife. They present evidence that Ms.

Santos filmed Isabelly playing in the laundry room before filling the washing machine with water and placing toys around it. A slippery plastic chair was allegedly positioned in front of the machine, creating a precarious situation for the young child. Prosecutors argue that Ms. Santos left Isabelly unsupervised for an extended period, resulting in the drowning. Ms. Santos' defense team maintains that Isabelly's death was an accident, stating that she had a positive relationship with her stepdaughter. They emphasize the lack of evidence suggesting Ms. Santos intended to harm the child. However, Isabelly's father, Alex dos Santos Assumpcao, firmly believes that justice must be served. He acknowledges the irreparable loss of his daughter but hopes that a fair legal process will provide some solace. Ms. Santos faces charges of willful homicide, use of asphyxiation, and domestic and family violence. She has until January 31 to formally respond to the charges. A judge will then decide whether to proceed with a trial by jury. This case has sent shockwaves through Brazil, raising serious questions about the safety of children within their own homes and the devastating consequences of seemingly motivated jealousy
