On her fifth album, Underdressed at the Symphony, the Atlanta singer navigates hard feelings with breezy stoicism
Faye Webster is the sort of person who shrugs at set-backs and just gets on with it There’s no such thing as an easy break-up, but there is such a thing as an easy-going break-up album. That’s the record the Atlanta indie-folk artist Faye Webster has made with.
She doesn’t seem particularly traumatised by either – though she has admitted that, given her natural introversion, TikTok fame has required a period of adjustment. Generally, the mood onis one of gentle determination. Rather than licking her wounds or shrieking at the universe, Webster is the sort of person who shrugs at set-backs and just gets on with it.
That aversion to melodrama is the defining vibe throughout a project that follows on from the viral success of her 2019 song “Kingston”. She has been through a few things – “I long for your touch,” she tells her ex on “But Not Kiss” – but there is warmth in her voice, and her lyrics look towards new beginnings and paths not taken.Webster finds many ways to explore an emotional state that hovers between quiet disappointment and stoicism.
Her not-at-all-bittersweet symphony closes on another upbeat moment with the twinkling “Tttttime”, which takes Talking Heads’ “This Must Be the Place ” and gives it a bustling millennial makeover. It’s a rewarding conclusion to an album that celebrates low-key resolve and which keeps its chin high and its gaze fixed on the new dawn just over the horizon.
