Inside midfielder Willem Drew has previously been used as a negator of opposition superstars in the midfield and at stoppage, but more recently has been finding his own footy and hurting rivals on offence. role Chris Scott has been challenged with a plethora of talent-heavy midfields in his time as both a player and coach, and Port Adelaide’s this Thursday night will be absolutely no exception.
Ken Hinkley’s side blew Geelong totally off the park in the earlier part of the 2024 season, at one stage getting out to an eight-goal lead well before half time. And in addition to their losses on a wing and half back, the Power will also need to brace for the potential explosion that is Jeremy Cameron – who has been in seriously strong leading into this year’s finals series.
Melbourne champion Garry Lyon threw up two names who could come under selection heat this week, depending on what Beveridge decides to value more at the selection table ahead of a must-win final against the in-form Hawks. The likes of Jarman Impey, Karl Amon and Josh Weddle are electric in the back half, constantly generating rebounding drive.
“You’ve got to be able to match them, because these three tall forwards, are they going to be able to run half the ground and try put some pressure on?” Lyon asked. The Hawks have looked vulnerable to big key forwards all season and the Dogs have three absolute weapons in that space. “The great thing is too, those boys can separate and get some one-on-one’s, no doubt about it – which makes the defensive one-on-one contests for Hawthorn’s defenders critical,” Brisbane Lions champion Jonathan Brown replied.
The Dogs might have the household names in Marcus Bontempelli, Adam Treloar and Tom Liberatore, but Hawthorn’s on-ball brigade have certainly stood up this season. But some injuries late in the season saw their momentum halt, winning just one match between rounds 16 and 21. “Part of that has been able to get two of their stars back into the fold after missing big chunks of the year,” he continued.“Luke Parker’s come back, little bit of centre bounce, goes forward, has been hitting the scoreboard and impacting at clearance,” Buckley said.
When the Swans are up and running, they’re arguably the hardest team to stop in the competition. Over to you, Adam Kingsley. “They have been an elite team at scoring from the back half and the Giants will want to cut that Sydney supply really quickly and score off front half turnovers as much as they possibly can,” Buckley continued.
The Giants have won all three finals match-ups against the Swans in their short history and with a preliminary final spot on the line, there will be no shortage of motivation for either side come Saturday.
“Brisbane would hope to see a lot of what they got early in the opening round and not a lot of what they got in the second half with the Blues coming back.” The Blues could be bolstered by the return of eight first choice players, but how many is too many to bring back in ahead of a huge must-win final?
The Blues confirmed on Tuesday that inspirational former captain Sam Docherty would make his return from an ACL injury in a huge boost for Michael Voss’ side.
